Kimberly, what do you do for a living?
I’m in my final year at Napier University, on a multidisciplinary design course. After I graduate I’d like to move to London and work with a design company that’s involved in all aspects of design, from product to packaging and graphics. My main interest though is product design.
From a design point of view, who inspires you?
I love the work by the Bouroullec brothers. I admire their ability to push the boundaries with their projects. Their designs always look beautiful and tell a story in their own right. I would like the freedom to experiment with materials and processes as they do. Simon Heijdens also inspires me – his fascination with the ways we interact with design is clear in all his work.
What inspired your design?
Observing people and their everyday interactions with their surroundings is always a starting point for my designs. The Comfortable is an interpretation of the apparently thoughtless act of resting one’s feet on a coffee table! The leather cushioned foot rest is a practical solution to this act, it’s comfortable for the user, prevents marks on the table, and looks good too’.
How long did it take you to produce the design?
The dwell brief was taken on at the start of term, and we had two weeks to complete the project. For me, it was a short process from research to prototype’.
What did you think of the whole Design for dwell concept?
I thought the competition was a great opportunity for design students (or any creative person!) to have their work judged by people in the design industry. It was also a wonderful chance for the winner to experience every stage of the design process – from idea generation to production and sales of the design. I’m delighted that my design was chosen as the overall winner. I’m excited that my table will be displayed in dwell shops and I’ll be thrilled if it sells well! Knowing that my coffee table will be in homes around the UK is a fantastic starting point for my career, and something that I’ll be proud to put on my CV’.
What did you think when you found out you won?
Shock … excitement … then shock again! I’m really happy that my design was chosen.
